Growing Up

This picture was taken during a tough part of my life, after my father lost his job and shortly before our house and car were repossessed. Our phone rang constantly from bill collectors and our family was strained. Not wanting to burden my parents, I worked full-time during the school year – earning $4.25 an hour at Subway – to earn enough for dress clothes that fit so I could attend a high school dance. Where we lived in Bolingbrook, IL (1979–1981, Flagstaff)

My brother had come to visit.  Here I am in my Subway uniform with my nephew and mother. (1992)

I was captain of the men's swim team my senior year of high school. (1994)

That year, I made All-State in the Men’s 100 Butterfly in Oklahoma. (1994)

I've always loved the Minnesota State Fair. Dad taught me for this game, it's all about momentum!  Let the hammer do the work.
